Glorious – the way ahead

An independent evaluation brief (closing date for applications July 1st)

Glorious is the final part in an epic cycle of performance work by Rajni Shah Projects (RSP) responding to questions concerning shifting cultural identity and community. The project takes place through a series of public conversations and letter-writing activities in ten locations (tbc), leading to a large-scale performance in which local musicians and residents take centre stage.

At its heart, the project is about finding a new approach to reaching audiences, and encouraging a more trusting and open communication between individuals in public space. The project is a development of five years of practical research by the company creating public interventions in city and town centres.

We are now seeking to undertake an in-depth evaluation of this ambitious new project, with the double aims of disseminating findings to the wider artistic community and to aid RSP in developing a way forward for the company including a strategic plan.

Key outputs:

  • An independent evaluation report (format to be agreed between evaluator and RSP), disseminated via partner organisations as a tool for others wishing to engage communities through a non-traditional on-the-ground approach
  • Suggested ways forward for RSP to develop a strategic plan

Proposed Timeline:

Glorious is on tour from Nov 11 (Newcastle) to Oct 12 (Lancaster), see Glorious overview for full details

  • Oct 11 - External evaluation consultant appointment
  • Jan 12 - Reflective day for Board of Directors and external consultant
  • Dec 12 - Evaluation Report delivery and plan for public launch

Methodology:

  • We are interested in fresh approaches to evaluative methodologies and reporting and therefore we look forward to working with an independent evaluator to develop a methodology that fits with Glorious and helps deliver on our intended outcomes (see below)
  • The evaluation may include discussions with all stakeholders in the project, including the Glorious creative team, Rajni Shah Projects board of directors, funders, participants and presenters

Outcomes:

  • A Glorious evaluation is disseminated to at least 50 carefully targeted artists, programmers, community leaders and funders, with a focus on inspiring new models of working , ensuring that, as well as continuing professional relationships, we are significantly focused on developing new partners.
  • As a result of this project we continue an active relationship with at least 50% of Glorious presenters, working together to create new programmes based around social inclusion and innovative creative projects in public space.
  • As a result of access to the Glorious Evaluation report, theatre presenters, funders and artists begin to change ways of thinking about how an artist might engage with local communities – we will aim to do this through engaging in a series of talks and discussions, beginning with a public launch event, as well as a targeted national dissemination of the final documents both in virtual and printed form.
  • At least 25% of people attending the launch event will be new to RSP’s work and this will begin the process of dissemination and furthering our objectives
  • RSP will be in a strong position to develop a sustainable strategic plan going forwards
