Living the Dream was a 60x60 film commissioned by motiroti as part of their 360° series. The film uses a minute of footage in which Rajni, with a carelessly painted white face, stares directly into the camera (an event which lasted an hour in total). Overlaid onto her face are ghostly images of other performance incarnations of herself – the Indian bride, the American blonde, and Queen Elizabeth I. The final piece is a gently humorous visual and aural meditation on identity, exposing the internal lines of geography and history that we inadvertently draw from inside ourselves and use to shape our own and others’ identities.
60x60 Secs was the first project of motiroti’s 360° programme, offering sixty one-minute film commissions to artists from the South Asian Diaspora living in Britain, India and Pakistan. Unfortunately the films are no longer available online.
